Anna was the Jewish daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher, making her a Galilean. After seven years of married life, her husband died. During the years of her long widowhood, Anna was exceptionally devout and gifted in spirit.

The Bible considered Anna as “prophetess” like Miriam, Deborah, and Huldah (see 2 Chronicles 34:22).She worshipped so constantly and “served God with fastings and prayers night and day” that it was written of her that “she departed not from the temple.”

At the age of eighty-four years, she was present at the time of Jesus’ presentation at the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

In the birth of Jesus, Anna’s faith was abundantly rewarded. She became a grateful and ceaseless witness “to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Giving the message that the day of their spiritual deliverance had come.
