The People of Christmas

Mary

Wife to Joseph of Nazareth and the mother of Jesus Christ.

Little is known of Mary’s personal history. But, like Joseph, Mary was of the tribe of Judah and the lineage of the famous King David.

While residing at Nazareth and before she became Joseph’s wife, Mary heard the announcement from Gabriel, an angel, that she would become the mother of the promised Messiah by the Holy Ghost. She was privileged to be the person who fulfilled the prophecy written by the Isaiah of a virgin bearing a son, the Messiah. (Isaiah 7:14) Her son, Jesus Christ, is the Messiah and the world’s Savior. Truly indeed, Mary “found favour with God,” and the Lord was with her.

After receiving the message, Mary went about 62 km (100 mi.) to visit her cousin, Elisabeth. Immediately upon entering the house, Mary was saluted by Elisabeth as the mother of her Lord. Though Mary was blessed, the Bible never considers her blessed above women rather “among” women. The Bible records the words of Elisabeth, “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” (Luke 1:42) After three months, Mary left and returned to Nazareth to her own home.

Joseph was made aware of her condition and the supernatural reason for it. He willingly took her to his wife. Soon after, a decree by Caesar Augustus required the couple to travel to Bethlehem (130 to 145 km.). While in Bethlehem, there was no room for them in the inn, forcing them to shelter among the cattle. There, Mary brought forth her firstborn son, Jesus..

You can read her story as recorded in Bible ― Luke 1:26-56; 2:36-38
