Caesar Augustus was born in B.C. 63. His father was Caius Octavius; his mother Atia, daughter of Julia, the sister of Julius Caesar. Principally educated by his great-uncle and was his heir.
After Julius Caesar’s murder, the young Octavius was in the triumvirate with Antony and Lepidus. After Lepidus’ removal, he divided the empire with Antony. The struggle for the supreme power was finished in favor of Octavius by the battle of Actium, B.C. 31.
On his victory, he was saluted “imperator” by the Roman Senate. However, they experienced difficulty finding a name that would precisely define the position of the new ruler of the state. Octavius declined the terms of “rex” and “dictator.” He was by the decree of the Senate styled Augustus in B.C. 27. This title means “majesty” or “venerable.”
He held office at the time of Jesus’ birth and served up to half of Jesus’ lifetime. However, his name occurs only once in the New Testament. It is reported, Caesar Augustus gave the decree that “all the world should be taxed.” (Luke 2:1) The consequence was the cause that Joseph and Mary journeyed to Bethlehem, the place where Jesus was born. This event was a Divine order according to Micah’s prophecy. (Micah 5:2)
