The People of Christmas

Zacharias

Stately foreigners from the East visited Jesus bringing Him gifts.

Their original description is μάγοι magoi, from which comes our word magician.  These individuals were philosophers, priests, or astronomers. They lived chiefly in Persia and Arabia. They were the learned men of the Eastern nations. devoted to astronomy, to religion, and to medicine. The Persian court considered them with high esteem and used as counsellors. These kind of men also followed the camps in war giving advice.

The expectation of the advent of a great king was far-spread at the time of the Nativity. It was probably founded, so far as the East was concerned, on the prophecies of Balaam and DanielNo reliable tradition deals with the country whence the particular persons mentioned in the Christmas narrative may have originated. But their observation of a new star seems to point to the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates, where astronomy was cultivated by the Chaldeans. These men were a sort of astronomers, and from their studies could have known Balaam’s prophecy of the star out of Jacob (Numbers 24:17).

All this would naturally prepare these men to travel from a great distance and follow the appearance of that mysteriously new star. Initially, they arrived Jerusalem and began inquiring of the new-born king of the Jews. These men desired to visit and worship Him, but could not find him there.  Herod the Great was current the ruling king.  After his hearing of the men, he further commission them to find out the child secretly wishing that he might murder him. The star eventually led them to the home of Joseph and Mary. Here at their destination, these men presented Jesus with gifts of “gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Afterwards, they took a different route in returning to their origin. They never provided Herod with the precise information he expected from them.
