The People of Christmas

The Wise Men

Stately foreigners from the East visited Jesus bringing Him gifts.

Their original description is μάγοι magoi, from which comes the English word magician. These individuals were philosophers, priests, or astronomers living chiefly in Persia and Arabia. They were the learned men of the Eastern nations devoted to astronomy, religion, and medicine. They were considered men worthy of the highest esteem in the Persian court and used as counselors, often following in war to give advice.

The expectation of the advent of a great king was far-spread at the time of the Nativity. Perhaps founded, as the East was concerned, on the prophecies of Balaam and Daniel. As sort of astronomers, and from their studies, these men may have known Balaam’s prophecy of the star out of Jacob (Numbers 24:17).

All this would naturally prepare these men to travel a great distance based on a new star’s mysterious’ appearance. Initially, they arrived in Jerusalem and began inquiring of the newly born king of the Jews, but could not find him. Herod the Great, the current ruling king, heard of their search, he summoned them to appear before him. Afterward, he commissions them to inform him where they found the child. His secret wish was that he might murder him.

The star’s appearance eventually led to Joseph and Mary’ s home. At their destination, they presented to Jesus gifts of “gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Afterward, they heeded God’s warning concerning Herod and traveled a different route in their return to their place of origin. And they never did provide Herod with the precise information he expected from them.
