Anna

Venerable widow widely-known for her devotion to God.

Her name means ‘grace.’ She was the Jewish daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher, making her a Galilean. After seven years of married life, her husband died. Throughout the years of her long widowhood, Anna was exceptionally devout and gifted in spirit.

The Bible considers her a “prophetess” like Miriam, Deborah, and Huldah (also mentioned as prophetesses in the scriptures). Anna’s worship was so constant, and she “served God with fastings and prayers night and day” that it was written of her that “she departed not from the temple.”

At the age of eighty-four years, Anna was present at the time of Jesus’ presentation at the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Upon her sight of Jesus, Anna recognized His identity as the long-awaited Messiah. Forthwith, she began expressing her thankfulness to God.

In the birth of Jesus, Anna’s faith was abundantly rewarded. Afterward, she became a grateful and ceaseless witness of Him “to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Giving the message that the day of their spiritual deliverance had come.

You can read her story as recorded in the Bible ― Luke 2:36-38.
