The People of Christmas

Joseph

Step-father of Jesus; man of character worthy of honour and respect.

Joseph was the son of Heli (Luke 3:23) and, like his wife, Mary, was of the tribe of Judah and the lineage of the famous King David. (Matthew 1:19)
In the New Testament, all that we can of Joseph can be summarized in a few words; he was called “a just man” (Matthew 1:19). He lived at Nazareth in Galilee (Luke 2:4) and was a carpenter by trade. (Matthew 13:55)

He was espoused to Mary, the daughter, and heir of his uncle Jacob, but before he took her home as his wife, he received an angelic communication of her unexpected pregnancy. (Matthew 1:20) He is last mentioned in connection with the journey to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old. But here, our knowledge of Joseph ends.

He may have died before Jesus entered into His public ministry. This view is merely conjecture because just Mary was present at the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee. Perhaps Mark 6:3 could also serve as an implication of his early death. In addition, Joseph’s name does not appear in connection with any other Biblical scenes, including the crucifixion. (John 19:25). Where, when, or how Joseph died, we know not.

You can read of Joseph in Bible – Matthew 1:18-25; 2:13-15, 19-23; Luke 2.
